El Cajon, CA – It was a beautiful sun-filled day at Sycuan Golf Resort (Pine Glen) for the 3rd and final round of the IMG Junior World Championships. “Mighty” Chloe Kovelesky charged out to a comfortable lead by firing a stellar first round score of -3 under 54. She never relinquished her lead once she grabbed it after day 1. Challenger and perpetual runner-up Avery “The Nugget” Zweig came out firing out of the gates with an 11 putt front 9 on day 1 for 1 over par. However, Zweig ran into problems on the back 9 and slipped back a bit with a 19 putt performance which led to a 4 over par 31 on the back 9 and a 1 day total of +5 over par 62. Rosie Bee Kim of the United Kingdom fired a +3 over par 60 for sole possession of second place after day 1 and Miki Yamamoto of Japan carded a +4 over par 61 for 3rd place after day 1.
Day 2 was “moving day” for the field and “move” they did! Low round for day 2 was Avery Zweig who used 5 birdies on the day to lead her to “level par” 57 for the day. “Mighty” Chloe Kovelesky and Maye Huang from Houston, TX fired the second lowest rounds of the day shooting +3 over par, 60.
Day 3 was the third and final round of the tournament which also had the groups reshuffled in order of their standing after round 2. The lead group was led by Kovelesky at E / even par, Zweig in second place going into the round with +5 over par and rounding out the lead group was Yamamoto at +8 over par. Kovelesky was her usual brilliant “rabbit out of the gates” extending her 5 shot lead over Zweig to a seemingly insurmountable 9 shots at the turn. Zweig and Yamamoto seemed to be a more closely contested battle as they dueled for second place, the leader wasn’t going to relinquish this lead on this day! Much to Zweig’s credit, starting with the 10th hole and through the 13th, Zweig chiseled 5 shots off of Kovelesky’s lead with a furious par, par, birdie, birdie (chip in on hole 13) to shave the lead down to 4 shots. The gallery seems to come alive with the fantastic down hill, yet silky chip in but was it enough? On hole 14, Zweig then had a crucial putt for birdie that would have shrunken the lead to 3 shots but she left it JUST SHORT of the center of the cup for a tap-in par. Alas, it was not meant to be with Zweig making par, bogey, bogey on 14, 15, 16 combined with a fantastic up and down par saves on 14 as well as 15 by Kovelesky. “Mighty” Chloe with her vast experience and tournament resolve seemed to be too much for anyone to over take on this day. She has once again proven why she is the undisputed World Champion for girls 8 years old and under. Well done by all participants at The IMG World Championships and most of the participants from IMG will be participating July 30-August 1 at the US Kids World Championships in Pinehurst, NC.
